Science and Engineering in the Ladybugs

It's all about science and engineering in the Ladybugs.  We love the opportunities to explore and discover new things and see old things through a different lens or criteria.  This past week we have designed mazes and then executed those designs using straws, marbles and box lids.  We explored surface tension using milk, food coloring and soap.  We even learned some basic botany while checking out daffodils.  In addition, we are seeing some very complex castle designs using the unit blocks.  We can't wait to see what the kids bring in for science fair!

Dr. Seuss and Pajama Day

How many tries does it take to get a good group picture?  More than you would think!

"Click, Clack, Moo"

We had barely finished our time with "Pete the Cat" before we jumped into an author study of Doreen Cronin's books.   We love "Click, Clack, Moo" and used it as a starting point for learning to write notes and letters and draw cows.  We're looking forward to building mazes next week as we read another book in her Farmer Brown series.

The Zoo and Pete the Cat

We love the zoo!

Surveying the Bumblebees for shoe colors
The shoe information was tallied and graphed once we went back to own room.
Sorting for attributes such as color, size, shape and number of holes.

We've been busy in the Ladybugs!  We visited the zoo to see the Arctic animals we had been learning about and then moved on to "Pete the Cat".  There are several books in the "Pete the Cat" series and we have been using them as a jumping off point for math, writing, reading and art activities.

Science and Valentines Day

The Ladybugs have been busy with science experiments.  We made gak and dissolved candy hearts in a variety of liquids.   We also talked about what it means to be a friend and spent time getting ready for Valentines Day.

STEM and The 3 Little Pigs

It started with reading "The 3 Little Pigs" and that was followed up
with a discussion of ways to build a strong house.

Materials were chosen and the engineering began.

Sometimes it took several tries before a workable design was found.

Then there was the testing phase.  Would the house stand up
to a wolf?`

Then it was time to document the process and the results.
