Final posting of the year

September 2012
June 2013
We're taller, louder, more confident, more capable, and funny!  (We're masters of the "Knock, knock" joke!)  We're ready for the next step!  It's been a great year, thanks for sharing your children with Seabury School.

Beach Day

The Ladybugs each made a survey.  Then we went out into the neighborhood to gather data.  The kids recorded the data on their surveys.
When we returned to the classroom, the children analyzed their data.
Check out the concentration!   The kids were interested and engaged in their task.   Important learning was taking place!  And you thought we just went for a walk!
Is there anything better than playing make believe with a friend?
Lunch at the beach.
Could they be any cuter?

I'll admit it.  It does just look like we took the dog for a walk.  The sun was shining and it was a beautiful day.  We were on a mission!  Each of the children predicted what they might find on a walk through the neighborhood.  They drew the pictures representing what they were going to look for.  We loaded up our clipboards and away we went.   A walk on a sunny day, yes, but so much more.  This work required focus and observation skills, they recorded data with tally marks, helped each other find what they were looking for and of course, somebody did have to walk Sadie.   When we returned to the classroom, the children went straight to the tables with no prompting to analyze their data and make comparisons with their friends.  What did we learn from this?  Some of our predictions didn't work out, I didn't find a single caterpillar; but who knew there were so many fire hydrants?  The kids learned to focus on what they were looking, record it on paper and then use that information to draw some conclusions about our neighborhood.  Turns out there are thousands of rocks, lots of houses, about 4 red trucks, 1 star and about 10 dogs.  It was a good use of our time.

Symmetry

The Ladybugs have been working with Cuisenaire rods in the classroom to learn about addition and multiplication equations.  Friday, we invited the Sharks and Superstars into the classroom to work on math with us.  It was fun sharing what we know with them!

We are also working on symmetry.   We have been using big pattern blocks to make symmetrical designs.  Now we are learning that some insects are also symmetrical.  Today we made butterflies that were symmetrical.  They are beautiful!
