Picasso, Monet, and Rothko

Working on our Picasso-like masterpieces
Picasso was so interesting that we managed to do two projects!

Our challenge for our STEAM project this week:
design a house for the 3 little pigs that the wolf can't blow over...

we had a variety of materials to build with. .  .
before the wolf (hairdryer) attempted to blow the houses down.
Math mentors were back this week,
this time playing "War" with a twist,
draw 2 cards and add them together
to determine who has the larger sum.

We are loving our study of famous artists.  Our room looks like a gallery, be sure to come check it out- it looks beautiful!  It's been a super week with lots of memorable moments but I think my favorite was this morning after math mentors when I asked the kids what was the best thing about the Gumshoes coming to our class.  One of our younger students said the thing she likes best is that when the Gumshoes don't know something then we can teach them and when we don't know something they can teach us.  Besides that, they are very strong!

Great Seabury Artists

There was Michelangelo . . .

and Kandinsky. . .

a little Morris Louis. . . .

and a little Jackson Pollock.

I love the bare feet!
A nature walk for Earth Day.

We even saw a chicken on our walk!

Our investigation of noted artists has been so well received by the kids.  They are enjoying trying out the different styles and methods of painting and learning more about the artists.  We have a few more artists next week before we start our unit on space.

Paint, boats and catapults!

Painting is serious business...
maybe a little messy...
but always beautiful.

Do boats float better with a lip on them or not?

Foil boats- how many pennies can you add before it sinks?
Launching our catapults

Back from spring break and right back to business.  We are finishing our unit on Africa this week, getting ready for the art show and did 2 different STEAM projects.   Our first project was making boats out of foil and counting how many pennies you could put on there before it would sink.   Our second project was building a catapult out of tongue depressors, rubber bands and spoons.  We were able to successfully launch our pom pom about 20 feet.  We decided there were several variables that made a good catapult.

We're going to the zoo, zoo, zoo!

We love the zoo! Beautiful weather, terrific kids and parents--what more could we ask for!
